Every year volunteers from all parts of the world come to Lampedusa to assist in the conservation efforts of the Caretta Carreta turtle. For those who have a passion for sea turtles and marine life, this can be one of the most rewarding positions. Volunteering on a can be hard work but is an incredible opportunity to make a difference, participate in wildlife scientific research, and meet new people from different cultures.


The benefits of volunteering include new experiences, working alongside scientists and marine biologists, obtaining hands on experience, and learning a new language.

Duties include, (but are not limited to) :
  • Educating and informing fishermen and visitors on the protection of sea turtles and marine habitats

  • Assistance to biologists and vets during research 

  • Biometric data collection

  • Assisting with medical examinations

  • Aiding in vetrinary procedures and treatment

  • Tagging flippers

  • Assisting with releases into the ocean (depending on the weather conditions)

  • Maintenance of the equipment and structures of the Center

To volunteer, you need:
  • ​To be at least 18 years old

  • Reasonable physical condition ( to walk around the island and to the site)

  • Able to carry/lift heavy weights

  • Ability to tolerate basic living conditions & animals such as cats and dogs 

  • To be willing to get wet and dirty

  • Ability to partake in cooking meals with housemates

  • To be able to pay for living expenses & travel expenses to the island

  • A positive attitude, sense of humor, open mind, and passion for nature 

  • To dedicate preferably 3 weeks to the work. Minimum stay: 1 week

You don't need:
  • Experience with turtles

  • Italian fluency

  • A background in biology
